A day in the life at an ELM Group retirement estate – captured through the lens of our Estate Managers

Saturday was #WorldPhotoDay and we saw this as the perfect opportunity to ask our Estate Managers, who work hard looking after our retirement communities, to share a picture with us that captures a highlight of their day at work.

We had such a huge response and received a variety of pictures reflecting the uniqueness of the jobs our Estate Managers do each day on-site. Managers have captured a wonderful snapshot of this, and we’ve received imagery showing estates in their best light, whether it be communal gardens in bloom, wonderful local wildlife or picturesque settings in which many of our estates are lucky enough to be nestled within.

We’ve also heard some heart-felt stories which have shaped the day-to-day life at some of our estates. One of these was the story behind the ‘rickety old bench’ pictured below at one of our estates in East Sussex.

Estate Manager Terry told us:

“I took on this Estate Manager role from a very popular manager who had been here for many years and sadly passed away suddenly. It took a while for the residents to adjust, but with a little thought, and the rickety old bench getting destroyed by an unfortunate accident, we were able to replace it. I ordered a plaque to go on in remembrance of the late Estate Manager without the residents knowing and with a little help from the gardener, we displayed some pots and baskets to make it a more inviting place to sit. I often hear residents comment that they’re going to sit a while with Alison, and I think that this little gesture may have just made the transition a little easier.”

We often celebrate the wonderful gardens at the estates that our Estate Managers and residents put so much effort into nurturing. Many of our residents are gardening enthusiasts and it fills us with joy to see how these beautiful gardens become the centre of community on-site. We’ve rounded up a selection of photography from our Estate Managers showing their estates’ gardens looking immaculate and inviting.

“It gives me great satisfaction coming into to work each morning and seeing the gardens that are kept well-tended by our ELM gardeners.” -  Chris, Estate Manager, West Malling.

We’re very lucky to own and manage retirement estates with some of the most picturesque views in the country, surrounded by nature and wildlife. Our Estate Managers work incredibly hard to nurture and cultivate these spaces, creating beautiful settings for our residents to spend their time, contributing to a sense of community to all who live there.

Our estates are located in some of the most stunning landscapes the UK has to offer and we’ve received a selection of photography from estates in Oxfordshire and Surrey.

Jan, who looks after one of our estates in Chipping Norton, is particularly proud of the giant Wellingtonia Redwood pictured on the right below which was planted around 1850. They are lucky enough to have four of these on the estate which boasts incredible Cotswolds views.

As a company we pioneered the development of independent leasehold retirement communities in the UK and today we own and manage over 3,000 properties across the country. To find out more about what we offer and how living in an independent retirement community could benefit you, click here.
