Growing for Wellbeing

This week we’re celebrating #GrowingforWellbeingWeek, which coincides perfectly with #Britishtomatofortnight. These initiatives highlight the powerful impact growing your own produce can have on both physical and mental wellbeing and offers the perfect opportunity to focus on the simple joy of growing – whether that’s a windowsill herb pot, a balcony planter, or a shared allotment space.

At our retirement estates, we see every day how even the smallest growing spaces can make a meaningful difference. From residents nurturing tomatoes in pots on patios, to tending raised beds and communal gardens, growing your own doesn’t require a large garden – just a little time and care.

Across many of our estates, shared gardens and allotment-style spaces are more than just places to grow fruit and vegetables, they are spaces to connect.

Gardening offers opportunities to:

  • Meet neighbours and build friendships

  • Share tips, stories and harvests

  • Enjoy time outdoors in a relaxed and social setting

Community growing has been shown to reduce loneliness and strengthen a sense of belonging – something we know is incredibly valuable within our developments.

Research continues to highlight the benefits of gardening and “growing your own”, particularly for mental health: with around 1 in 4 people in the UK experiencing mental ill health each year, initiatives like this are a reminder of the importance of simple, accessible ways to support wellbeing.

Gardening can help to:

  • Improve mood and reduce stress

  • Build confidence and self-belief

  • Encourage gentle physical activity

  • Foster a sense of achievement

It also provides the chance to learn new skills and enjoy the natural environment around us.

Whether you’re planting your first tomato seed, tending a long-loved garden, or enjoying the shared spaces on your estate, this week is all about celebrating personal growth as much as what’s growing in the soil.

So why not get involved? Plant something new, join a neighbour in the garden, or simply spend some time outdoors appreciating the green spaces around you.
